ULM students learn popular events celebrated by Japanese

Four Japanese students explained five different festivals celebrated in Japan throughout the year.

They demonstrated the main point of the Setsubun festival held on February 3rd. During this festival the father of families plays the role of the devil, while the other family members throws soy beans at him.

Professor Kono put on a mask and played the role of the devil, while the Japanese students threw the beans.

The festival is celebrated to disperse bad spirits from the home. It is supposed to bring good luck and fortune to the family for the coming year.

The Japanese students also explained how to play a card game called Kurata. This game is played on New Year’s.

Lilia Kohwa, one of the students from Japan, said, she really wanted to teach everyone how to play the game since they couldn’t do it for their presentation with junior high kids.

The students did not have their luggage for four days after they arrived to Monroe. The snow storm delayed the flight with their luggage on it.
