New iPhones: Worth the money?

Forget “Coke or Pepsi?” It’s that time of the year again to bring up the question, “Apple or Android?”
Each new year brings a new wave of the iPhone which gets many people asking, “Is worth it?”
In September, Apple released the iPhone Xs and Xs Max. Both the models claim to have a faster processor and better cameras, compared to other phones in the Apple family.
The Xs Max features the largest display screen of any iPhone but with a whooping price of $1099.
Tom Sugg, a general studies senior, has owned both an Apple and an Android phone.
According to Sugg, “iPhones are easier to use than an Android in the sense of how the user interface is setup.”
However, for personalization and hardware Sugg relies on his Android. “Having an Android almost feels like having a mini computer in your hands and that’s why I use it,” Sugg said.
On the other hand, some people like Will Gresham believe “Androids are easier to use for someone who is not good with technology.”
Gresham, an aviation freshman, uses Androids, because they are cheaper than iPhones.
Another cool feature of the iPhone XS Max is its 8-megapixel front-facing camera. There are rumors of “beauty mode” filters added into the camera’s Smart HDR technology. This filter supposedly smooths and brightens the skin of the person taking a selfie.
Apple has not made a comment on this rumor.
“The iPhone is making new products that kind of force you to upgrade to the newest version by making you feel like the ones they previously made don’t stack up to their newest model,” Sugg said.
“I feel like Apple could add one new feature to a phone and label it as a new product and still make everyone want to purchase it.”
The constant evolution in the phone size even has devout Apple customers like Erika Parker questioning Apple’s inventions.
“Why do we need a bigger phone? Why keep upgrading in size? Soon, we won’t be able to fit it in our pockets, which would be an inconvenience to most that don’t carry a purse or bag,” said Parker, a dental hygiene freshman.
“It is common that once a new iPhone is released, the previous generations start dying down and weakening in battery life,” Parker added.
Parker, however, does think iPhones are more user friendly than other smartphones.
In October, the more affordable and durable iPhone XR will go on sale. This phone holds the same Bionic processor as its predecessors, but has only a single rear camera, while the Xs and Xs Max feature a dual rear camera.
The iPhone XR will retail at roughly $750. The Xs and Xs Max come in silver, space gray, and gold.
However, Apple decided to play with color with the XR. The phone will be available in white, black, blue, yellow, coral and red (which is a (PRODUCT)RED affiliate and contributes to the Global Fund to fight AIDS).
