The Hawkeye claimed seven awards in the Louisiana Press Association’s Better Student Newspaper competition. Five of those awards came from excellence in sports coverage.
Srdjan Marjanovic swept the sports photography division, winning first through third place.
The Hawkeye sports reporting team also claimed two of the top three spots. Cole Avery placed second for best sports story and DeRon Talley placed third in the same category.
Avery also placed third for the best column.
Lane Davis placed second for the best advertising staff member.
“It’s an honor for our hard-working students to be recognized by industry professionals for their journalistic achievements,” said Christopher Mapp, director of Student Publications and an assistant professor in mass communication. “Our students are striving to creating the best student publications program in the state, and to be recognized by the LPA in this way validates their goals and ambitions.”
