“No Ordinary Family” started off with a normal family faced with roles such as being a parent who works all the time, a parent who struggles with a past secret, and, of course, teenagers and their high school drama.
But the surprise is that this “normal” family has superpowers from when its plane crashed in the Amazon river.
At first, it seems like the superpower angle isn’t going to work for the episode, but this is proven wrong as it progresses.
Each family member has a power that, unlike the X-Men, doesn’t resemble his or her character but allows the whole family to compensate for something wrong or missing in their life.
One of the first examples where this occurs is when the mother receives her power.
She works 80 hour weeks to support her family, but in doing so, she doesn’t have much time for her husband and her kids. She finds herself never having enough time to even go out on a date night with her husband until her power manifests itself. Her power of super speed conveniently gives her more time with her family.
There is also a bit of mystery introduced when the father of the family fights a man who is also endowed with abilities, but was not on the plane when it crashed.
Some might say the idea has been done. But everything has been done in this day and age. The trick is to introduce a new way of telling it, and this show exceeds at doing it.
“No Ordinary Family” can be seen on ABC on Tuesdays at 7 p.m..
