Students are always looking for ways to be unique. What better way to showcase your unique style than a fashion show? Senior computer information systems major Robert Jerrod Brown and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity presented their second annual fashion show entitled, “Déjà Vu: Past, Present, and Future.”
One of the highlights of the fashion show was that it featured several different entrepreneurs from ULM. Some of the brands represented were Royal Bum, Broke Billionaires, Preppy Poindexter, and AmirJames.
Live music and poetry was incorporated into the show. Not only did the audience get to enjoy the different fashions, but they were also entertained with ULM talent. Déjà Vu is a cause that helps support the dreams of many students.
The first era showcased was the 30s to the 70s. The second transitioned into the 80s to the present. Lastly, the stylists focused on what fashion will offer in the future.
Each model put his or her own spin to the runway. The audience saw the sense of pride the models took in wearing the designers’ clothing.
“I really want to make my college experience one of the most memorable experiences in my life, so I often decide to take risks and step out of my comfort zone. I thought what better way to do that than to be a part of this great fashion show,” said Briona Scott, a sophomore criminal justice major.
“The whole experience has been so fun. I am so inspired by Robert Jerrod Brown’s creativity and drive to put this show together and to be a part of his dream is awesome,” Scott said. Scott also modeled in the show.
Brown had a specific vision for his second show. He wanted to replicate the progression of fashion from the past, to the present and future. In 48 days, he took his vision and transformed it to the runway Wednesday night.
Brown said he encourages everyone to chase their vision. When Brown is able to step behind a camera and use his artist eye, he said his true passion is being fulfilled.
Senior mass communications major Lincoln Powell, Jr., the face behind Preppy Poindexter, said that one of his greatest inspirations is his mother. He attributes his “preppy” style to her dressing him as a child.
“Someone told me that no matter what I wear, it comes off as preppy. A poindexter is anyone who stays true to themselves, which is what I strive to do, everything- through my actions and how I dress,” Powell, Jr. said. “Preppy is only a demeanor. You don’t have to be preppy to wear Preppy Poindexter.”
Powell has been into fashion for as long as he can remember. The Preppy Poindexter pieces featured in Déjà Vu are from the spring/summer line entitled “Summertime Dreaming.”
“I wanted the summertime feel to this line. It’s just laid-back. You get dressed up and have nowhere to go, or for those of us who are from the country, you get dressed to just go walking around. I was going for a look that you can go out and have fun in,” Powell, Jr. said.
