NeighborhoodScout.com named Monroe the 2010 12th most dangerous city in the U.S.
The list was released earlier this month and includes 100 cities with a population of 25,000 or more.
Monroe, with a population of 53,091, falls between Miami Beach, Forida. andMurray, Utah.
NeighborhoodScout.com gathers data from all local law enforcement agencies in America, the FBI, and the U.S. Justice Department to compile accurate crime reports.
These reports mirror the crime indexes created by the FBI, which include offenses such as willful homicide, forcible rape, burglary, motor vehicle theft, and arson.
So far in 2010, Monroe has 6,235 violent and property crimes reported.
Violent crimes reported amount to 901 of the total count with five murders, 30 rapes, 120 robberies, and 746 assaults recorded to date.
The chances are 1 in 9 of an individual becoming a victim to crime in Monroe.
Citizens are more likely to become victims to property crime. Property crimes amount to 5,334 of the total crime count for Monroe.
Many students were shocked to hear the results of the study, leaving them a bit concerned.
Tyra LeBlanc, a sophomore pre-pharmacy major from Morgan City, was surprised to find Monroe as 12th on the website’s list.
“It seems like a really quiet city. If I would’ve known that I probably wouldn’t have come here,” Leblanc said
Despite the list’s release, LeBlanc says she still feels relatively safe.
Kyle Hadley, a freshman Business major from Stonewall agrees, “Although, I’m not surprised Monroe is on the list, I still feel relatively safe living here.”
