Students have had concerns this semester about how often the sprinklers on campus are being used.
This semester there are sprinklers being used all hours at various locations on campus. Students have to take different routes to not get soaked because the sidewalks are almost as wet as the grass. Getting out of a dorm has been like going through a maze.
“I think it’s a waste of water and an inconvenience to pedestrians trying to get to class,” Melvin Grimes, a sophomore biology major from Bastrop, La., said.
Bryan Thorn, the director of the physical plant, said, “We have had an unusually dry fall and we are watering more to keep the plants and grass alive.”
With the recent budget cuts all across the state, students have raised their voices to ask where exactly money is going. When asked why the sprinklers were being used so much even with the budget cut, Thorn said, “Water is much less expensive than having to replace the landscaping around campus. Maintaining the University requires an investment in preventative care otherwise the replacement of plants or equipment can be very costly.”
