I knew what I was going to say about the new King’s of Leon album before I had listened to a single track.
Little did I know the “Come Around Sundown” would be one of tearjerkers, Bob Seger-esque melodies and an echoey piano.
Just a year ago, Caleb Followill was bragging to Spin magazine about just how much whiskey he could drink in the mornings. Now he’s singing lamentations to a woman who pieces his home together when he can’t get drunk enough.
The band shows a small measure of maturity. They sing “Bury all the pictures and tell the kids that I’m ok/ Even if I’m forgotten you’ll remember me for a day.” The album is full of lyrics that contrast wildly with a song like “Sex is on Fire.”
“Come Around Sundown” feels heavy, but it lacks the sensory appeal of KoL albums like “Aha Shake Heartbreak.” The head-bobbers go out the window at the sound of all Caleb’s bellyaching.
