With a new coach and a new quarterback, ULM stands at 3-3 midway through the 2010 season. The Warhawks have had their share of highs and lows this season and here are their midterm grades this season.
QUARTERBACK: Redshirt freshman Kolton Browning has proven that he is worthy of the big stage and then some. With a 62.6 completion percentage, 1283 passing yards, and seven touchdowns, Browning is showing that the future is bright for Warhawks football. GRADE: B+
RUNNING BACKS: The season started as speculation that senior Frank Goodin would break Calvin Dawson’s record for career rushing yards at ULM. Goodin only averages 2.6 yards per carry as the main contributor this season, but change-of-pace back Jyruss Edwards is hitting his stride after a 60-yard, two-touchdown performance against Western Kentucky. GRADE: C+
WIDE RECEIVERS/TIGHT ENDS: Four receivers have at least 17 catches through the first half of the season. The most explosive of the quartet is junior Luther Ambrose, who has 28 catches for 356 yards and three touchdowns this season. GRADE: B
OFFENSIVE LINE: The offensive line is truly the soft spot due to its inexperience as a whole. Running lanes have failed to open up as the ULM only has averaged 2.7 yards a carry, but in due time, the line will jell together. GRADE: C-
DEFENSIVE LINE: The defensive line play this season is solid, as Ken Dorsey leads this unit with 25 tackles and three sacks. Dorsey has at least three tackles in all six games and even recorded a safety against Florida Atlantic. GRADE: B-
LINEBACKERS: The top two leading tacklers this season happen to be linebackers Jason Edwards and Cameron Blakes, with 49 and 44 tackles, respectively. GRADE: B+
SECONDARY: At times the secondary has been shaky in giving up the big passing play, but other times the unit made its share of great plays as well. GRADE: C+
SPECIAL TEAMS: Kicker Radi Jabour is once again streaky, but he is showing upside with his recent kicks. Punter Aaron Munoz looks as if he could be next in the line of great ULM punters as he can punt for accuracy. GRADE: C
OVERALL: At 3-3, ULM is right in the middle of the pack for the Sun Belt title. Their three losses might have been blowouts, but in their three wins, the team has shown it can keep its composure to win close games. GRADE: C+
