The ULM water ski team won a record 25th national championship and third consecutive championship, this weekend in El Centro, California.
The Warhawks edged out their arch rival UL-Lafayette in total points 12,885 to 12,610. This was closet score of any of the team’s last three national titles.
“We all knew that Lafayette was going to have a really really strong team team this year. They had some good recruits coming out of the summer,” said Claudio Koestenberger. “It was going to be a head-to-head race until the very end and that’s what it turned out to be.”
Other notable schools competing in the Division 1 category were Alabama, Arizona State, Florida State, LSU, North Carolina and UCLA.
Not only did the Warhawks finish first in the overall score, they were the leaders in every category.
“I feel like this is the biggest one because the other two years we won by such a big margin,” said team captain Will Oliver. “Coming into this one, it could’ve gone either way.”
Tyler Scott, along with four others will be leaving the team after this year. The team looks to rebuild quickly in preparation for next year
“Obviously it’s a great accomplishment to get three in a row. I’ve been here for those three years. All I’ve known here is winning,” said Scott. “
The 25th title holds significant importance for the Warhawks. It has been a goal that they have worked towards for years.
“The 25th, that’s huge for the school. Its kind of what we’ve been shooting for even when I got here my freshman year, wanted to get to number 25,” said Scott. “Finally getting it is a really big accomplishment for the program and it says a lot about the quality of skiers that come through here. We’ve got to keep it going knowing and try to get number 26.”
