New ULM president Nick Bruno was on campus Friday to help students and faculty celebrate Homecoming. While on campus, President Bruno wanted to meet with reporters to share his excitement about being the newly chosen Commander-In-Chief for the ULM troops.
President Bruno showcased his thrill and honor of being chosen by showing up to the interview wearing a ULM Warhawks pin on his gray suit, accompanied by a maroon and gold tie. His manor and demeanor was one of a southern gentleman, by walking in, shaking hands and introducing himself humbly. He then sat down, with a large smile and said “Let the questions flow.”
Q: In what areas do you feel ULM can improve?
A: We, and by we, I mean ULM, have many areas that need to become more efficient. Northeast Louisiana needs more collaboration with higher education institutions. I want to be apart of bringing these institutions together. I also want to have an uptick in sales, which is vital to bringing more recognition to ULM.
Q: How do you feel to be the president of ULM?
A: I have never been so speechless. I am excited, because this is where I want to be; this is what I want to do. But most of all, I do not plan to fail the students, faculty or staff of this university. I am humbled by the support I have received from students and the community, even from those who favored other candidates. But, now it is time to put that part of history behind us and move this campus forward together.
Q: Why did you pick Homecoming Week to come visit ULM, since you do not technically start until November 8?
A: This is the perfect time to come to ULM. This week [homecoming week] is a time for the past and present to come together because of their love for ULM. The spirit of being a Warhawk is loud and proud this week, and I just want everyone to know how excited I am to be a Warhawk again. Plus, I’m ready to get started.
Q: What do you feel your presidential style will be?
A: I am very much a relationship person, and believe very much in relationship building. I plan to earn everyone’s respect, while also exhibiting respect. I consider myself to be very laid back and have a good personality. But, I want everyone to remember, I’m not President Cofer and I do have a different style then he did. I plan to use different styles from different presidents I’ve known, while also instilling my own values and unique style of leadership.
Q: Any words you would like to share with the students, faculty, staff, community, etc?
A: It’s important that everyone continue to support this amazing institution. Students, get involved in on-campus activities and become an even bigger part of the Warhawk nation. I want everyone to know how loyal I am to this system and how important being president is to me. I will always be visible for anyone to come by and see me. I also plan to keep my email account open from now on incase students or the public has a question or concern they would like to share with me. And lastly, I would like to say “Go Hawks.”
