Often when books are written and turned in to movies they differ drastically. Characters may be younger or older, might have different roles than before and some may even be removed completely.
Many small details are removed also- many of which affect the book and story majorly. Sometimes, whole chapters are removed and never even seen on screen. Sometimes, readers are disappointed when going to see a book on the big screen.
While some series have been very successful as books and movies, their success is determined by acting, not relation. Series may also be put into one movie like ‘The Series Of Unfortunate Events’. The entire movie is of the entire series, missing many key facts and clues.
Then, there are series like ‘Harry Potter’, which have a movie for each book and can cover many more details. In either case, there are many details, which are absent, and this affects the plot and ending. Sometimes entire new plots are created due to this.
‘The Giver’ is a book whose theme is individuality, and also is a metaphor for communism and breaking away from it. Although the movie kept many facts and events, it has been transferred into a story about love.
By changing small details such as Asher’s job placement, and by making them older and having events happen over years versus months, the entire movie strays away from the book.
As a reader, I fall into the world of the books I read; when I see my entire favorite books in movie-form, I am usually disgusted.
Readers fall in love with books and characters, and share a common vision with the author. When scriptwriters change these things, the world is destroyed. It is burned to ashes and then blown away.
As I doubt screenwriters read the entire book, I encourage them too. Then, they would see how it really should be reenacted; not how Hollywood wants it molded.
In this way, many movies would relate more to the books, leading to happier readers. If the readers are happier, there is a better chance of them buying the movies on DVD or encouraging people to go see it. Thus, leading to higher profits for them, and better movies for us.
As a movie, The Giver was very well scripted, but the book is written beautifully. It has touched many hearts, just as ‘Harry Potter’, ‘The Series Of Unfortunate Events’, and many other books.
Movies are understood to be for entertainment, but where is the joy for the reader? If one loves a book, or series, enough to quote it or even have it impact their life, Hollywood owes everyone better related movies.
