BATON ROUGE, La. – If there is one thing that the LSU Tigers know how to do, then that is defeating their fellow in-state schools.
The ULM Warhawks became the latest victim on Saturday, losing 51-0 to No. 5 LSU in Baton Rouge. The Warhawks’ loss is the 27th consecutive time a Louisiana team failed to defeat LSU. The Tigers’ last loss to an in-state team came in 1982 to Tulane. The ULM defense held the Tigers to just 251 yards on offense, but turnovers by the offense allowed LSU to have a short field to work with.
ULM (4-6) was sloppy with the ball all game with five giveaways, including two interceptions by Kolton Browning. The freshman quarterback saw his streak of eight games with at least 200 yards passing end after throwing for 61 yards. The Warhawks only reached LSU’s side of the field four times, but the offense sputtered leaving the Warhawks scoreless.
LSU (9-1) jumped out to a 23-0 lead at halftime despite gaining 90 yards in the first half. However, junior cornerback Patrick Peterson and the Tiger defense clamped down and held ULM to 190 yards. Peterson recorded an 85- yard interception return at the end of the first quarter to set up a 20-0 for LSU.
ULM returns to Sun Belt play and to Monroe for its game against North Texas on 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The Warhawks will close out the season in front of the Malone Stadium faithful for the final two games of the season.
