Futuristic film “Chappie” stars Hugh Jackman, Sharlto Copley, Dev Patel, Sigourney Weaver and Die Antwoord with director Neill Blomkamp.
Crime is patrolled in the future by an oppressive mechanized police force. One police droid, Chappie, is stolen and given new programming. This droid becomes the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself.
If you’re looking to see a movie and have fun, then “Chappie” is for you. It’s not ground-breaking or won’t be on any ‘best of’ lists, but it’s solid enough to warrant a viewing if you have time.
You have to understand what you’re getting yourself into though. The trailers are all over the place, so it is best to understand what you’re about to watch to help with expectations.
If you like your sci-fi movies with action as well as some texture or allegory to them, then “Chappie” may be for you. “Chappie” is a true science fiction film and doesn’t pretend to be more than that.
“Chappie” contains elements that will make you think and feel though, but this is always the case with a Neill Blomkamp movie.
The movie follows a robot named Chappie that has artificial intelligence, so the issues such as creation and consciousness are explored.
The film’s best moments are derived from Chappie’s sense of wonder as he interacts with other characters and tries to absorb the vastness of the world around him.
You get to see Chappie learn and become a person, which is strange but unique at the same time. Chappie is will make you both laugh and get watery-eyed at points with his naive yet smart character. The movie is set in Johannesburg, which makes for a fun time hearing and seeing these South Africans interact around Chappie.
I will admit that there are some weaker, almost absurd plot points, but I can easily forgive those for every positive emotion this movie made me feel.
“Chappie” was a lot of fun, and that alone made it worth my ticket price. It’s a delightfully endearing marvel of cinematic magic.
The CG animators have done some truly remarkable work here, crafting an incredibly detailed creation that is more expressive and engaging than most of its human counterparts, but it suffers from lack of good writing at times.
