There are unobserved rules for smoking on campus.
Students must smoke at least 50 feet away from a building entrance.
However, even with this rule in place, many students are seen doing it. When leaving a building, cigarette butts are left all over the sidewalk and even right next to the door.
With so many students smoking within 50 feet of an entrance, it does not seem possible that much can be done about it.
“I have asthma, and every time I see somebody smoking on campus, I have to go out of my way to avoid them,” said Justice Law, a freshman computer science major from West Monroe.
However, Stewart McCulloch, a junior music major from New Orleans, said that smokers can also be seen as the victims.
“I am concerned about the growing trend of anti-smoking sentiment in this country. I am appalled by how little smoking I see on campus,” McCulloch said.
“Everyone knows that smoking is bad for your health, but some people choose to do it anyway. Some people choose to eat fast food, but it is not being edged out of public places,” MCulloch said.
Regardless of student preference, the rules do exist, even if they are not being adhered to.
