The ULM women’s basketball team opened up the 2010-2011 season on Friday with a 97-30 win against the New Orleans Lady Privateers.
Two school records fell, as ULM held UNO to a record low for points allowed in a contest, and the 67-point victory was the largest in school history.
Coming into the season, the Lady Privateers returned only one player from last year’s team to a roster now filled with eight freshmen.
“We knew they were going to be young going into the game, but I didn’t want it stop us from playing hard,” said ULM women’s basketball coach Mona Martin.
ULM (1-0) did just that after opening with a 21-0 lead in the game’s first six minutes, under the lead of guards Elizabeth Torres and Priscilla Mbiandja.
New Orleans (0-1) could not do anything after giving up the ball 20 times in the first half, leading to a 54-15 deficit at halftime.
The Warhawks showed no signs of letting up in the second half, opening the half with a 16-2 run before resting their starters and allowing the bench to get some playing time.
Sannisha Williams led all scorers with 15 points, as freshmen Ashleigh Simmons and Jasmine Shaw ended the night with 10 points each.
As a team, ULM crashed the boards well with 33 of their 55 rebounds coming on the offensive end. It was the Warhawk defense and post play that proved to be so stout, earning 51 points off turnovers and 68 points in the paint.
The Warhawks hope to continue this kind of play Tuesday night when they travel to play Nicholls State in Thibodaux. ULM will then play Northwestern State on 7 p.m. Friday in Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
