The Miss(ter) Texas State Pageant was like most beauty pageants.
The only difference was the ladies weren’t ladies.
Ten male students competed in drag – if you can call it drag – for the chance to win this event sponsored by the Student Government Association.
There were cash prizes for the first, second and third place winners, and small trophies for the winners of the talent, sportswear and eveningwear competitions.
In the first phase of competition, sportswear, the “ladies” strutted their stuff in sports bras and athletic shorts. They also used props like tennis rackets and dumbbells to complete their attire.
The winner of this preliminary section was Blake Oden a sophomore pre-nursing major, who went by his stage name Syphilis Dixon and dressed in pink from head to toe.
In the talent portion of the competition, there were hilarious and raunchy acts such as speed eating a banana, chair dancing, and lip syncing to Britney Spears.
Students laughed and sang along during Oden’s performance.
“Doing a dance to Britney Spears ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time” that was definitely the funnest part even though the whole dance was complete improv, I was just doing my own thing but it was a lot of fun,” Oden said.
The preliminary winning act, however, was performed by Luke Arsement, a sophomore psychology major, otherwise known as Miss Openia L. Eggs. Openia performed a flawless lip sync and dance to the “Petty Song” as made popular by the Starrkeisha Cheer Squad on social media.
Arsement said in preparation for his talent he watched the video of the song on repeat for two days.
“My favorite part was hearing the crowd scream, sing and dance to my talent,” he said.
Even though performing his talent was his favorite part, he had some difficulties with his wardrobe during the act.
“The most difficult aspect was trying to keep my boobs on,” Arsement said of his adhesive bra.”
The final event was the eveningwear competition. The contestants classed it up – as much as they could – in formal dresses and sashayed across the stage.
The eveningwear preliminary winner was Josh Usie, a junior marketing major, who took the stage in a beautiful red gown.
The audience provided a drumroll at the end of the pageant before it was announced who won first place and the $400 prize.
In the end Usie, also known as Dixie Normus took home the illustrious title of Miss(ter) Texas State.
“It was so much fun…Losing is not necessarily bad as long as you take something away from it and know what you can do to make yourself better,” Oden said.
