2010 starts a new chapter in the history of the University of Louisiana at Monroe football team. A few signs of change at ULM include new uniforms, new decals on their helmets, and most importantly, new expectations along with a new head coach.
“We want to go out and play hard and fight every game,” senior quarterback Trey Revell said. “We want to win the Sun Belt and go to the New Orleans Bowl. I’ve been chasing it for five years.”
Last season, the Warhawks started 6-4 and were on the cusp of making the school’s first bowl game since their jump to the Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) in 1994.
However, painful losses to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Middle Tennessee State left ULM playing the waiting game for a possible bowl bid. It never came. Enter new head coach Todd Berry, who comes with a new attitude and a catch-phrase for the team — “All in.”
“The big adjustment is intensity and discipline,” senior cornerback Nate Brown said.
“Now, it’s more of a team aspect. Everybody is disciplined. Nobody’s thinking about themselves. When the choice is made, you are thinking not only how it affects you, but how it affects the team, as well.” Brown said it is this same intensity that has ignited a fire that has made the players excited about this upcoming season.
“People are starting to step up and be leaders,” Revell said. “Whenever you have that happening and people starting to feed off of each other, it’s starting to click.”
Berry went 29-60 in two prior coaching stops at Illinois State and Army; however, he turned around the fortunes of the Illinois State program.
He led the Redbirds to the NCAA Division I Football Championship tournament in 1998 and 1999, and to the Gateway Football Conference (now the Missouri Valley Football Conference) title in 1999.
The Warhawk faithful hope Berry can produce similar results in Monroe.
