“Fun Belt” living up to its name in 2022

Before the 2022 college season began, not many expected the Sun Belt Conference to be one of the main talking points in college football. Four crazy weeks later, the Sun Belt could be the best and most fun Group of 5 conference.

Leading the way in the east division is Coastal Carolina, who sits at a perfect 4-0 record. Right behind them is James Madison, who has a 3-0 record following a jump from the Football Championship Division. Old Dominion and Marshall, two of the newcomers of the conference, have had more wild starts to their seasons, with Marshall having an upset over No. 8 Notre Dame.

The west division has also had its share of the fun. After defeating ULL, ULM currently stands in first place in the division. With no clear favorite, the division appears to be wide open, with every team having a shot at winning. Six out of the seven teams in the division hold a record of at least .500, with five of them having a 2-2 record.

If there was one team that perfectly represents the insanity of the conference, its Appalachian State. To start the year, the Mountaineers lost a heart breaker vs North Carolina in a game where they scored 40 points in the fourth quarter. They responded to the loss by walking into College Station and upsetting No. 6 ranked Texas A&M 17-14. In week 3, after hosting ESPN College Gameday, App. State pulled off a last second hail mary win vs Troy. The next week, they were upset 28-32 by first-year member James Madison.

The conference is anyone’s game, and anyone trying to predict the Sun Belt must remember that anything can happen.
