Dr. Long “PawPaw,” there are no words to express the deep sense of loss we all feel in the world today at this news. You were like a father and grandfather to so many. I still cannot believe this is true. Peace and comfort to all the friends, students, colleagues, and family members.

Derle Ray was one of the first people I met when I entered LSU as a freshman horn player. He was a great example for those of us who were new to Tiger Band, and the LSU School of Music. He was someone I admired, and of whom I have many memories which I’ve remembered 30+ years later. R.I.P. Derle Ray.
