Warhawks suffer losses in trip to New Orleans
February 10, 2023
The Warhawks’ (1-4) trip down to the Big Easy turned out to be anything but easy.
The tennis team once again traveled down south to take on an in-state opponent. ULM took on LSU in a series in January and got swept in two 0-4 losses. Last week, ULM hosted a home match versus Missouri State and pulled out a 4-3 win.
Friday’s match featured New Orleans (3-0), which won last year’s matchup with a 4-3 score. In the doubles stage, UNO’s Ana Kouchnareva and Ksenia Reznitskaya defeated ULM’s Giovanna Pereira and Mackenzie King 6-0 to take the first match. Didi Bredberg and Raluca Puscas took down Oleksandra Balaba and Angela del Campo 6-2 to give the Privateers the doubles point. UNO took a 1-0 lead heading into the singles.
In the singles stage, UNO increased its lead to 2-0 after Didi Bredberg beat Alessandra Anghel 6-2 and 6-2. The Privateers went up 3-0 when Puscas defeated Tamara Bachmann 6-1 and 6-4. They claimed the match when Kate Kalistratova took down King 6-1 and 6-2, giving UNO a 4-0 clinching lead.
The Warhawks were not completely swept. Alice Klinteby beat Laurie Barendse in three sets to give ULM its first point. The last two singles were won by the Warhawks as Balaba beat Kouchnareva in three sets, and Pereira took down Dechoux. Saturday saw the Warhawks go just across town to take on Tulane (2-2).
Lahari Yelamanchili and Charlotte Russell beat Anghel and Klinteby 6-0 in the first doubles match. Adelaide Lavery and Jiayun Zhu defeated Balaba and del Campo 6-3 to claim the doubles point for the Green Wave. The only victory of the day for the Warhawks was a three-set win for Klinteby over Kristen Barland. It was the only point for ULM as Tulane took five of the six singles matches. The Green Wave won the overall match with a 6-1 score.
The Warhawks will continue their road trip when they travel to Northwestern State (3-1) on Saturday.
