Penalty kicks, the mechanic that highlighted ULM’s season, ended the team’s tournament run in Foley, Alabama. Georgia Southern beat the Warhawks 4-3 in penalty kicks to advance to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Women’s Soccer Tournament.
The No. 3 Eagles retaliated in the 80th minute after trailing for most of the match thanks to an early goal by Inge Konst. The tie lasted through regulation and two overtimes, leading to a penalty kick shootout.
ULM played aggressively from the beginning of the match and sought an early goal. The Warhawks set up shop on the Eagles’ side of the pitch, and within four minutes had three corner kicks.
In the 12th minute, forward Emelie Kobler took a shot on goal. Georgia Southern’s goalie deflected the ball away, but Kobler and Libby Holmes found Konst for the go-ahead goal.
ULM remained on the attack, but Georgia Southern looked to even the score with a shot of its own in the 18th minute. Goalie Mickaela Leal made the save to keep the lead alive.
The Warhawks continued their offensive campaign in the second half, whereas the Eagles failed to find their footing amidst the fouls and lost ball possession.
With 10 minutes left in regulation, Georgia Southern found the back of the net to tie the game.
The two teams moved on to the first overtime. Despite putting two shots on goal, ULM failed to score a goal.
As soon as the second overtime began, Georgia Southern took a shot on goal but was cleared away. A deflected shot by forward Skylar Blaise put Blakey in position to seal the win, but an awkward bounce sent the ball over the net.
The second overtime ended, and the two teams went to a penalty shootout. The Eagles outshot the Warhawks 4-3, moving on to the semifinals.
