ULM’s College of Business and Social Sciences (CBSS) hosted a guidance counselor breakfast on Sept. 13, bringing together local high school counselors to learn about the university’s resources. The event aimed to equip counselors with the information needed to guide students toward ULM.
Over breakfast, counselors from northeast Louisiana networked with ULM faculty. Representatives from various departments shared details about the university’s academic programs, extracurricular activities, student support services and scholarship opportunities. Faculty emphasized that ULM offers generous scholarships to qualifying students, making higher education more accessible and affordable.
A key point of the presentations was ULM’s connection with companies and platforms that offer students internships. The presenters highlighted that students can access local and national internships, and the university has a high job placement rate across all fields.
“If you have students who love solving math problems or tackling computer issues, the computer science program could be a great fit for them,” Arturo Rodriguez, associate professor of accounting and information services, said. He also emphasized that ULM supports students pursuing internships or jobs outside Monroe.
“If you have a job away from town, perhaps in Dallas or New Orleans, we have provisions to help manage transportation and rent — not just in computer science, but across all faculties,” Rodriguez said.
Assistant political science professor Daniel Hummel explained the impact of events, such as the guidance counselor breakfast, on student enrollment.
“These events have certainly helped ULM increase the number of students,” Hummel said. “They bring us together and allow us to share the resources available at the university, which helps counselors guide their students more effectively.”
Counselors asked questions during a Q&A session following the presentations. The event concluded with discussions on how ULM and high school counselors can collaborate more effectively to support students on their academic journey.
