ULM’s art faculty placed several pieces of their work in the Bry Art Gallery on Aug. 8, displaying pieces ranging from sculpture and pottery to photographs. Before it closed on Sep. 19, the exhibition hosted one last event to commemorate the month and a half of viewership.
Associate art professor Brooke Foy scheduled the faculty presentations, which included works from visual art professors Megan Smith, Vitus Shell, Winnie Tomeny, Tamrin Ingram and Foy herself.
“We are really excited, as faculty, to share a little bit of ourselves with you,” Smith said.
Each artist spoke about their art for five minutes, ensuring ample time for the exhibition viewing afterward. Many art pieces began as creations outside Monroe, some even outside Louisiana.
Not every artist went far from home to create, though. Graphic design professor Winnie Tomeny spoke on her experience making The Hawkeye’s new logo.
“When Whitney Martin, the director of Student Publications, contacted me, she invited my graphic design concentration department to participate in a local design competition,” Tomeny said. “My student and I submitted 18 unique logos; I had the pleasure of designing the logo chosen for her project.”
After the faculty finished their speeches, attendees moved to the Bry Hall Art Gallery to view the artwork one last time. Students took their time viewing each piece, some resonating on personal levels. Foy spoke about her experience creating art and how her work will inevitably erode and be forgotten.
“Your art is not always going to live on. Your art is not always going to stay just the way you wanted it,” Foy said.
