If given the chance, most children would leap at the opportunity to play their favorite character. For many, that character is the one and only Junie B. Jones. The Strauss Youth Academy of the Arts fulfilled the dreams of local children with its production of “Junie B. Jones the Musical Jr.”
The musical drew inspiration from Barbara Park’s “Junie B. Jones” book series, which she published from 1992 until she died in 2013. Park created the series after witnessing a kindergartener’s fear of the school bus. The musical brings to life the childlike essence of Park’s stories, adapted for the stage by Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich,
The story follows Junie B. Jones as she transitions from kindergarten to first grade. Armed with a lunchbox and a notebook brimming with possibilities, Jones quickly discovers that her best friend, Lucille, found new friends. To make matters worse, her bus buddy Grace abandoned her. Luckily, Junie B. Jones meets Herb on her way home from school, and the two become inseparable. Together, the pair navigates the ups and downs of first grade.
Musical director Nicole Morris explained how the children at the Strauss Youth Academy of the Arts transformed into their characters.
“Several of [the children] said they read the books to prepare for their character,” Morris said.
While all the actors deliver standout performances, Magnolia Jefcoat and Audrey Stogner’s portrayals of Junie B. Jones were particularly memorable. It felt like the girls were Junie B. Jones herself!
“Well, she has a lot of adventures, and I do too. We’re very similar, and it also takes me back to first grade,” Stogner said. “She’s very sassy like I am with my brothers.”
Morris spoke on the impact of “Junie B. Jones the Musical Jr.” on local theater.
“The community’s praise has been abundant toward the show and the children’s performances,” Morris said.
Proceeds from ticket sales will help fund upcoming plays and improve the building for future shows. For more information or to donate your time or resources, contact the box office or visit the website at syaaonline.com.
