Last Tuesday, Chosen Campus Ministry hosted “She Talks,” an event for young women to get together and share their thoughts about personal struggles.
Senior pre-pharmacy major Treasure Garner led the event’s discussion. She serves as the director of Chosen Campus Ministry’s spiritual growth and development. She emphasized the importance of creating a supportive community for women on campus.
“The idea of ‘She Talks’ is to create an environment where women in all types and walks of life can come together and discuss and relate to one another,” Garner said.
One of the major themes discussed during the event was encouraging young women to “let out your inner queen.”
Junior elementary education major Maya Taylor is the president of Chosen Campus Ministry. She explained that “letting out your inner queen” is about embracing confidence, strength and self-worth.
“It involves advocating for yourself, becoming the woman God intended you to be and pursuing your passions,” Taylor said. “When you let out your inner queen, your light shines bright, no matter what.”
During the discussion, Garner brought up what it means to “be a queen,” what qualities make up a queen, how to portray yourself as a confident one and how one can “pick up [their] cross and walk.”
Garner highlighted how having attendees bring a journal and write down their thoughts allowed women to engage with the event. The organization encouraged students to share different perspectives on women’s issues.
“It’s a space for reflection, where they can jot down insights and emotions, helping to solidify their experiences,” Garner said.
Attendees listened intently to Garner’s words as she guided them through the discussion.Participants’ reflections ranged from feelings of reassurance to feeling humbled.
Karley Lange, a freshman biology major, felt that sharing her thoughts with a group of like-minded women made the night special. She believed that the event cultivated campus community.
“I think it’s important for young women to have a group of other women that they can be honest about life with,” Lange said. “Having a community that supports you brings both peace and security into your life, and I believe ‘She Talks’ does just that.”
