The ULM soccer team fell to Old Dominion 1-0 on Thursday night, suffering its first Sun Belt Conference (SBC) defeat of the season.
This match marked only the second meeting for the Warhawks and the Monarchs, as Old Dominion moved to the Sun Belt in 2022. Their initial matchup was a draw, setting the stage for the highly anticipated rematch in Norfolk.
The Warhawks (7-4, 1-1) faced a tough test against the Monarchs (6- 3-1, 1-0-1), the preseason favorites. Despite a determined defensive display, an own goal near the end of the game was enough to seal the victory for Old Dominion, who remain undefeated in conference play.
The first half saw a slow start for both teams, with the Monarchs controlling much of the possession.
ULM goalkeeper Jennifer Handy kept the score level, making two key saves.
Despite their resilience on defense, the Warhawks struggled to generate offensive opportunities, failing to register a shot in the first 45 minutes.
The Warhawks, in search of a goal, substituted forward Emelie Kobler for Jensyn Lins and Vanessa Praher for Stacey Qosja in the break.
Similarly, the Monarchs brought in offensive players, allowing tired players to rest.
Old Dominion began the second half with continued pressure, while ULM sought to find its rhythm.
The Warhawks finally tested the Monarchs’ defense, with Mara Grutkamp, Beth Strutton and Bernadett Stefan each recording a shot.
However, Old Dominion maintained the upper hand throughout the match, outshooting ULM 11-4 and 3-1 in shots on goal.
The decisive moment came just after the hour mark when a scramble in front of the ULM goal led to an own goal by defender Janne Van Brummelen, giving the Monarchs a 1-0 lead. Constant push from the Monarch’s offense forced an error from a ULM defender.
ULM tried to respond but struggled to break through Old Dominion’s solid defense.
Handy finished the match with three saves, keeping ULM within striking distance until the final whistle. Both teams earned two corner kicks, but ULM couldn’t capitalize on their set- piece opportunities. The Warhawks committed 12 fouls compared to Old Dominion’s nine.
The Warhawks are looking to bounce back with a match against James Madison University in Oct. 4. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
