The ULM women’s volleyball team (4-10, 0-2) fell to Southern Mississippi in its Sun Belt Conference opener in Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Sept. 27.
During the first set, the Warhawk defense started slow, resulting in Southern Miss up 10-2.
ULM halted the run by capitalizing on the Lady Eagles’ tipping errors. The Lady Warhawks fed sets to dynamic outside hitter Ariana Brown.
After multiple kills by Brown, the Warhawks started a block fest. Ariana Brown and Hannah Redrow acted as a brick wall against Southern Miss’s swings. Middle blocker Lydia Mesusan made some noise with a solo block, leaving ULM trailing 14-11.
The Warhawk offense also gained momentum. Libero Cameron Rogers served 2 aces, and outside hitter Taly Cloyd kept the Golden Eagles on their toes with some strategic tips down the line. Despite the ladies’ efforts, the Warhawks failed to close the gap, resulting in a score of 25-17.
Southern Miss hammered a quick slide-swing from the middle blocker in the second set, scoring the first point. The Warhawks followed with a 5-point run, utilizing multiple defensive errors made by Southern Miss. The Lady Eagles then responded with a lengthy run thanks to multiple failed blocks. Capitalizing on the Warhawks’ mistakes, the Lady Eagles won the set 25-21.
The final set began with ULM scoring first as a result of a tip. The Lady Warhawks built a lead, putting up tough double blocks, serving multiple aces and lighting up the floor with quick kills. ULM fought hard to maintain its 19-12 lead, but the Golden Eagles battled to avoid a fourth set. After a series of aggressive serves and swings, Southern Miss ended the game with a score of 25-21.
The Lady Warhawks will have another chance to capture their first conference win as they travel to South Alabama on Oct. 4.
