All eyes and ears need to be on the ULM women’s basketball team this season. After an impressive season, the Sun Belt Conference has placed the Warhawks fourth in its preseason ranking. The women’s team is eager to make a serious run for the finals, driven by the progress they made last year.
To start off the season, the squad received many honors. Her Hoop Stats placed head coach Missy Bilderback on the mid-major Coach of the Year watchlist, a nationwide honor recognizing her success on and off the court. In a recent media day event, Bilderback emphasized the team’s growth.
“We will be overall much better (than last season),” Bilderback said. She mentioned her trust in the lineup, stating they are talented enough. Bilderback also highlighted the role of one of her key players, guard Jakayla Johnson.
“I expect [Johnson] to take on even more [responsibility] this year,” Bilderback said. Johnson made ULM history this season by becoming the first player since 2006 to earn an All-Sun Belt First Team spot. She was the second-highest scorer on the team, averaging 15.2 points per game.
During the offseason, the women’s team recruited eight new players who are expected to play a vital role in improving the squad’s rebounding issues. The roster features a well-experienced group of upperclassmen along with the five returning players. The team’s main priority is developing strong chemistry among new players, which will be crucial for their performance on the court once the season begins.
Despite its high rank, the team has a tough conference ahead. James Madison, Troy and Old Dominion still rank above ULM, posing tough competition. In addition, last year’s champion, Marshall, is considered a dark horse this season.
ULM also has a grueling non-conference schedule against Hawaii Rainbow Wahine (Hawaii conference champion). Nonetheless, coach Bilderback is still confident in her team.
“It’s a tough schedule,” Bilderback said. “But it should get us ready for the Sun Belt Conference.”
Bilderback’s leadership is the heart and soul of this team. Paired with the talent and competitiveness of the players, she has brought unexpected success to the Bayou. The Warhawks can make it to the SBC finals and put up a good fight. This team is constantly improving under the coach’s and veteran players’ guidance. The team will improve with each passing year, and the Warhawks can see an SBC championship on the horizon.
