The ULM women’s soccer team (9-8-2 overall; 3-5-2 SBC) clashed with Southern Mississippi (3-7-5 overall; 2-3-5 SBC) in a fierce match, emerging victorious with a 3-0 win at Brown Stadium.
Both teams battled intensely for dominance on the field. Just eleven minutes into the match, defender Beth Strutton struck gold, netting a brilliant goal that secured ULM’s early lead. The goal ignited a fire within Southern Mississippi, who fought to even the score. ULM goalie Jennifer Handy remained steadfast, blocking the Golden Eagles’ attempts with two saves.
With an assist from ULM midfielder Mara Grutkamp, junior Giulia Franco managed to reach the game’s second goal. Southern Mississippi doubled its efforts. Despite this, as the first half ended, the scoreboard remained unchanged—the Golden Eagles had no goals to show for their efforts, while ULM took a 2-0 lead.
Fueled by its lead, ULM charged into the second half with a surge of energy. ULM forward Skylar Blaise took control of the game, scoring the third goal with an assist from defender Ally Richardson. The lead set an imposing tone for the rest of the match.
As the tension grew, yellow cards and fouls flew like confetti, each team earning three. Minor injuries became common, but ULM held their ground with a 3-0 advantage over the Golden Eagles.
The Warhawks’ regular season ended with a win over Southern Mississippi, securing a spot at the Sun Belt Championship. They will face James Madison on Nov. 4 in Alabama.
