In a move that stunned the Formula one fans, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has officially left Mercedes to join Ferrari for the 2025 racing season.
The announcement came on Feb. 14, 2024, after months of speculation about Hamilton’s future. Ferrari confirmed the signing on social media, welcoming Hamilton to the team and calling the partnership “a new chapter in motorsport history.”
Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes marked the end of an era. The British driver joined Mercedes in 2013 and led the team to unprecedented success, including six championships and over 80 Grand Prix victories.
“I’m grateful for the incredible journey I’ve had with Mercedes,” Hamilton said. “This decision wasn’t easy, but I’m excited for this new challenge and the opportunity to drive for such an iconic team.”
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff also reflected on the split.
“Lewis has been the heart of this team for over a decade. While we’re saddened to see him go, we respect his decision and wish him all the best at Ferrari,” Wolff said.
Hamilton will team up with F-1 racing driver Charles Leclerc, forming what many are calling a “dream lineup” for Ferrari. Leclerc shared his enthusiasm on social media, writing, “It’s an honor to share the garage with a legend like Lewis.”
While Hamilton’s move sparked excitement among Ferrari fans, it also raised questions about how he will adapt to Ferrari and whether the team can finally break its championship drought.
Formula one supporters now eagerly await the start of the 2025 season to see how this bold switch will reshape the grid.
