I am scared. I feel like it is okay to say that now that rumors have become reality. I am scared for my rights, my friends, my family, my community—I am scared and it is not something I can fix.
I am taking testosterone: a hormone replacement drug covered by insurance.
Trump plans to get rid of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) entirely. This would not only affect the transgender community. Do you have a female friend with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)? She likely takes estrogen to balance out her hormones. Do you know a man with a testosterone deficiency? Can you guess what he takes?
Trump said he will “sign an executive order instructing every federal agency to cease the promotion of sex or gender transition at any age.” The youngest a child can access HRT is fourteen, according to the World Professional Association for Transgender Health. However, a child cannot just walk into a doctor and get pumped with a drug of their choosing.
For someone as young as fourteen to access HRT, they will first need to be on hormone blockers for one year minimum. This is typically used before puberty, and it is easily reversible within a few years. If a child is unsure of their gender, receives hormone blockers, and decides they no longer want to be on them, it is as easy as stopping a pill or shot. Their puberty will hit, just a little later than most.
If the child still wants to go through with transitioning after a year of hormone blockers, they still need approval from multiple different specialists and parental permission before starting HRT.
Nobody wants your kids to be transgender. I, personally, want every kid to be happy. I would not want to force my child into anything they don’t want to be because I know exactly how that feels.
Trump’s policies not only ostracize the transgender community for their identities, but it also hurts the cisgender community that doesn’t fit into the typical “male” or “female” box given. You can’t exclude a community built on diversity and not expect your own to check a few boxes.
