In late January, the Office of Career and Student Development (OCSD) introduced adaptations to the guidelines relating to Registered Student Organizations (RSOs). The OCSD held a Zoom meeting for RSO officers and faculty advisors to discuss the new expectations.
One notable change from the previous system is the implementation of a new point system. The OCSD plans to evaluate RSOs with a new performance-based ranking system in which RSOs can earn one to five stars based on campus activity and engagement.
Points are assigned based on active membership, chapter community service hours, campus involvement, and community and organizational awards. Higher-ranking RSOs in the new system will gain additional benefits and funding.
In addition to the new point system, the changes to RSO guidelines include branding rules. The new RSO handbook states that RSOs must adhere to the branding policies set by the ULM Office of Marketing and Communications.
Regarding these policies, the university requires prior approval of academic and athletic logos with student organizations. RSOs must demonstrate a history of supporting the university community, such as the Student Government Association (SGA) and the Campus Activities Board (CAB). Organizations that have significantly contributed to campus life and supported ULM’s mission over the years can receive approval.
RSOs that do receive approval to use the official ULM logo are not permitted to adjust the logo in any way.
The OCSD encouraged students to choose a unique theme and color or create graphics in their logos that reflect their own identity. They can also design their logos to align with their club’s objectives. RSOs are not permitted to use the university’s official colors—maroon and gold—to create their logos. The Office of Student Affairs accepts logo submissions to confirm whether they conflict with the university’s policies.
Graphic design coordinator Mandy Strickland is leading efforts to guide the organizations in finalizing their logos so that they can maintain unique identities. The Office of Student Affairs encourages students to reach out and give feedback on the new guidelines and rating system.
