You walk into Schulze Dining Hall and suddenly lock eyes with one of the most beautiful people you have ever seen. As you catch the glimmer in their eyes, you realize you are all smiles and now feel that pull to talk to them.
In honor of the month of love, today’s highlight will cover Carlo Martinez Jaramillo and Hannah Habisreitinger—one of ULM’s beautiful athletic couples.
Jaramillo is a sophomore distance runner for the ULM track and field/cross country team. Hailing from Gatesville, Texas, he dominated the Texas track and field scene during his high school career. He garnered a state champion title, two state runner-up titles, and 10 district/area champion titles to name a few. Since becoming a ULM athlete, his success has continued.
In 2023, he earned Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year and Newcomer of the Year accolades. He also received the Louisiana Sports Writer Association Men’s Cross Country Freshman of the Year award.
During the 2024 season, he set a personal best 4:17.74 mile at the Howie Ryan Invitational (2/9), placed third in the 1500m at the Louisiana Classic (3/15-16), and ranked within the top ten at the Louisiana Tech Mook 4 Invitational (10/5).
In addition to being a standout student-athlete, he also runs his own business, Lotus Running. As a McMillan running-certified coach, he offers personalized coaching for runners and sells holistic performance supplements.
The madam of the couple, Habisreitinger, also holds prominent roles at ULM.
Habisreitinger is a junior biochemistry major from Hammond, Louisiana. She serves as vice president of the ULM Student Government Association, a member of ULM Mock Trial, a Hawkseeker, and an athletic tutor. She is also a part of the Honors Program, Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Med Honor Society, and ULM Baptist Collegiate Ministries, where she works with public relations.
Despite their hectic schedules, Jaramillo and Habisreitinger deem time management and communication as vital tools in maintaining their relationship.
“We make sure to communicate and be mindful of our time because we understand that our schedules are full,” Jaramillo said. “Every moment we spend together is precious.”
Habisreitinger agreed and emphasized passion as a key factor.
“It can be tough at times, but my biggest tip to balance everything is to be organized and break things down through time management,” Habisreitinger said. “I have such a deep passion for everything that I am involved in, which keeps me motivated to balance it all as well.”
They also credit God and their Christian faith as the foundation of their success together. As firm believers, they dedicate time to attending church, praying, and studying the Bible together.
Jaramillo used the strength of a triangle to further explain their spiritual dynamic.
“You know, a triangle is the strongest shape in the world, and the way it looks in a marriage is there is the wife on one side, the husband on the other, and God at the base,” Jaramillo said. “The closer you get to God, the stronger the relationship.”
As for Valentine’s Day plans, Jaramillo and Habisreitinger will be states apart—Jaramillo will be competing at the Howie Ryan Invitational in Houston, Texas, while Habisreitinger will be competing with the Mock Trial team in New Orleans.
All will be well in the end, as they plan to celebrate the following week by doing a few of their favorite things together.
