In the second home game of the weekend, the ULM Warhawks (7-20) (3-11) recovered from a loss Thursday against Texas State by defeating Southern Miss (10-17) (5-9). The Warhawks got their revenge from earlier in the season when the Golden Eagles beat them in January 84-67.
The teams matched each other evenly in the first half of the game. Both teams shot above 50% from the field going into halftime, but sloppy play from the Warhawks prevented them from adding points to the board. Errors such as seven turnovers and shooting 17% from the three-point line had them trailing after halftime.
As the game developed, the Warhawks warmed up and gained momentum. Smart plays and hustle from Jalen Bolden—who had 13 points and four rebounds g —and Tyreese Watson kept the Warhawks in the game.
Entering the second half, the Warhawks and the Golden Eagles mirrored each other, executing play by play and scoring point-for-point. A three pointer by Coltie Young quickly sparked life in the Warhawk offense. After a 10-0 run, the Warhawks tied with the Golden Eagles with 12 minutes left on the clock.
Down the stretch with a minute and a half left in the game, Tyreese Watson shot five out of six to ice the game and secure another Warhawk win. The game leaders were Jalen Bolden who finished with 24 points and seven rebounds, Tyreese Watson who had 23 points and eight assists, and Makai Willis who had 18 points and nine rebounds.
The Warhawks will go on the road for a rematch against Texas State and then play against Arkansas State in Jonesboro on Feb. 22. The Warhawks will then return home on Feb. 25 to play against James Madison.
