With the spring season ongoing, the ULM women’s golf team has already played four tournaments. The team showed improvement and resilience to achieve its goal of winning the Sun Belt Conference with an event win already under their belt.
ULM got off to a rough start. The Warhawks finished 13th out of 17 teams at the PDI intercollegiate. ULM scored +5 (869) with freshman Isabel Mas Pitarch and sophomore Daniela Campillo leading with -6 (210) and -4 (212) respectively. Pitarch recorded her career-low tournament score.
Coming off a loss, the Warhawks shifted momentum at the Great River Cup. ULM secured first place, winning all three matches against Utah Valley, Arkansas State and James Madison. The win also marked ULM’s second-straight title at Great River Cup.
“I was really happy with how the team played,” head coach Rachel Pollock said. “It was a great preparation for our team to get ready for the big one [Sun Belt Championship] at the end of the year.”
Junior Anna Andrysova played a key role in ULM’s title defense, dominating in her match against Utah Valley with a 6&5 victory. Andrysova was one hole behind after 15 holes in her semifinal against Arkansas State, but her birdie on the 16th to secure a 1 up-victory. Andrysova won 3&2 after four straight holes in the final match against James Madison.
Campillo continued her strong form and won both her semifinal and final matches with 5&3 victories. Pitarch sank a key birdie on the 17th hole to secure a 1 up win and seal the championship for ULM.
The Warhawks continued their strong pace in the Westbrook Invitational in Arizona. ULM tied for fourth place with a score of 854 (-1) and finished ahead of teams such as Penn State, Missouri, Minnesota, Nebraska and Washington State. Andrysova led the team with a three-round score of 210 (-6).
Andrysova also won her second individual championship at the Momentum Transportation UNF Collegiate. She registered 75 (+3), 65 (-7) and 73 (+1). Andrysova was selected as the Sun Belt Conference’s Women’s Golfer of the Week for the second consecutive week. The recognition also marked the third time Andrysova has been named SBC Women’s golfer of the week.
“Anna has been on a really hot streak right now,” Pollock said. “She has played incredible in the last two weeks at the match play in Arizona and in Florida. We are really proud of her.”
As ULM heads into the second half of spring season, there’s plenty to be excited about. The Pinetree CC Women’s Collegiate is up next, followed by a home tournament, the ULM Invitational.
Pollock praised contributions from young standouts and experienced leaders.
“We’ve had some young players step up and continue to perform: Isabel Mas and Daniela Campillo,” Pollock said. “And then our seasoned veterans, who are always steady, like Anna Andrysova and Johanna Sjursen. We know they’re reliable, we can count on them, and they just show up week to week.”
The Warhawks won the Sun Belt Championship in 2023 and aim to win it again.
“Our main goal is to win the conference championship,” Pollock said. “I think that’s the main goal every year for every team. But that’s our primary focus, and we’ve got about five weeks left to prepare for the conference.”
