Fans packed Fant-Ewing to celebrate senior night and the 50th anniversary of the ULM women’s basketball team on Feb. 22. The Warhawks (11-16 overall; 7-9 Sun Belt) prepared to defend their home court for the last time this season against University of Louisiana at Lafayette (12-14 overall; 8-8 Sun Belt) following a dominant win over Troy.
ULM matched Lafayette’s pace from the start in the first quarter. The two teams traded baskets, responding each time the other scored. The Warhawks finished the quarter with a one-point lead, 12-11.
In the second quarter, Lafayette stormed back and ended the half leading 28-23. With strong defense, an effective inside game and physicality in the paint, the Ragin’ Cajuns put ULM at a disadvantage this quarter. The Warhawks struggled to rebound the ball or attack the basket as they usually do. At halftime, ULM aimed to reduce the 12-rebound deficit and cut back on the seven turnovers they acquired.
The Warhawks gained momentum on offense in the third quarter. Strong post play from senior forward Sakyia White and shooting from guard Meloney Thomas helped ULM tie the game with five minutes on the clock.
Halfway through the fourth quarter, a switch flipped for ULM. Back-to-back buckets from senior guard Jakayla Johnson, a three pointer and a layup, led to the Cajuns’ lead being reduced to two points.
After a dramatic finish, the Warhawks closed out their home schedule with a defining win, 62-58. The win was ULM’s first over Lafayette in Fant-Ewing Coliseum since 2013.
Notable players included Johnson with 20 points and season-high seven assists. Senior forward Katlyn Manuel had 13 points and six rebounds, while White had 11 points and six rebounds.
The Warhawks ended their last home game on a high note.
