Coming off back-to-back wins, ULM (11-17; 7-10 SBC) hoped to build on their momentum with a third victory on the road. Marshall (11-18; 6-11 SBC) also aimed to extend their two-game winning streak. Unfortunately for the Warhawks, the Herd emerged victorious on Feb. 26 with a 73-65 win.
In the first quarter, the Warhawks kept pace with Marshall until the first timeout. Marshall secured the lead shortly after, scoring 10 points and closing the period 19-13.
After a rough start in the second quarter, the Warhawks responded quickly. A shot by senior guard Nya Valentine sparked an 11-3 run and tied the game 24-24 with six minutes left on the clock. The teams traded leads before Marshall took a 32-30 advantage into halftime.
Down seven early in the second half, ULM got a boost from senior Sakyia White’s layup. Valentine and senior Jakayla Johnson followed with threes, cutting the deficit to one possession. The Warhawks traded three pointers and layups until they were up by one at the end of the quarter.
The fourth quarter was just as competitive as the last. Marshall controlled the early stretch, but ULM gained momentum and took the lead. It wasn’t until the final minutes that Marshall took full control. Forcing two Warhawks’ turnovers, Marshall iced the game by sinking 8 of 10 free throws to close out a 73-65 win.
White led ULM with 17 points and 21 rebounds, recording her fourth double-double of the season. Forward Katlyn Manuel picked up her third-straight game in double digits, scoring 12 and pulling down three boards. Valentine and senior guard Brikayla Gray added 10 points with Valentine hitting two three-pointers and four assists.
The Warhawks concluded their regular season with a 79-51 loss against James Madison. ULM entered the SBC tournament as the No. 10 seed but were eliminated in the second round by Georgia Southern, 75-69, on March 5.
The team finished the season with an overall record of 11-19 and a conference record of 7-11.
