Caleb Wilson, a junior mechanical engineering student at Southern University and member of the “Human Jukebox,” went to the hospital on the night of Feb. 27, 2025. A group of men who claimed Wilson was injured while “playing basketball” brought him to the hospital. Before police arrived, the men left.
Investigations later revealed that Wilson’s injuries resulted from hazing, not basketball. Wilson and eight other pledges were taken off campus and punched in the chest by three men wearing boxing gloves. Wilson collapsed and appeared to have a seizure after being punched. Emergency services were called, but efforts to stabilize Wilson were unsuccessful.
Authorities launched an in-depth investigation, interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence to determine the events leading to Wilson’s death. Several arrests followed. Caleb McCray, a 23-year-old Southern graduate, turned himself in. Kyle Thurman, 25, was arrested in Port Allen, and Isaiah Smith, 28, turned himself in on Tuesday. Thurman and Smith face charges of criminal hazing, while McCray faces charges of criminal hazing and manslaughter. All three await court proceedings as the investigation continues.
In the aftermath, Wilson’s family, friends and classmates expressed shock and grief over the loss. His peers described him as dedicated and passionate about his studies and music. “Caleb was a bright light in our community,” said one of his classmates. “He was always there to help others and brought energy to every performance.”
A memorial for Wilson took place Friday to celebrate his life and mourn his loss. Community members gathered to share memories and support one another during this difficult time.
In response to the incident, Southern University suspended the intake of new Greek members. University officials also announced plans to review and strengthen policies related to student safety and Greek life to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
