The ULM softball team secured a strong 7-0 victory against Grambling State University (GSU) on March 11, extending their winning streak after their dominant 9-1 win over Detroit Mercy on March 9. With this victory, the Warhawks improved their overall record to 19-10, holding the fourth seed in the Sun Belt Conference (SBC) standings.
The Warhawks controlled the game on both pitching and defense. GSU not only failed to score a run, but ULM also prevented them from recording a single hit. ULM also logged its first triple play since 2015, meaning that ULM got three outs during one defensive play.
The Warhawks and the Tigers have faced each other in softball numerous times. ULM has maintained a strong record against GSU, winning 20 games out of 20.
Redshirt senior pitcher Victoria Abrams put up an impressive performance, pitching four innings and striking out six batters. She played an integral part of ULM’s defense and maintaining GSU’s no hitter.
Sophomore infield Marissa Zenzen played a crucial role on the offensive end, scoring a home run to seal ULM’s victory in the seventh inning. Zenzen’s home run extended ULM’s streak of hitting at least one homer in the last four games.
As the Warhawks come off a four-game winning streak, they will face off against an SBC opponent Georgia State in a three–game series. The Warhawks look to improve their conference standings to have an advantage in the SBC tournament in May.
The Warhawks have struggled in previous SBC campaigns but with their current winning streak, they have a chance to rise within the competitive SBC. ULM’s combination of experience and emerging talent could be the key to be consistent in conference play. The upcoming games will test their ability to win when it matters, but if the Warhawks continue their all-around strong play, they could become a serious contender in the SBC.
As they face LA Tech on March 18, ULM will look to continue their winning streak and finish the regular season strong.
