After several weeks of games, the Warhawks (8-8) are preparing for Sun Belt Conference play. ULM faced off against Alcorn State (2-11) on March 11, their final opponent before conference play begins. Coming into this matchup, the Warhawks were hot off a two-game winning streak and had also won the series against UT Arlington.
Until the bottom of the fourth inning, the game was a defensive showdown. Both teams remained scoreless with ULM freshman pitcher Brennan Eager recording three strikeouts and the team recording two hits.
When the bottom of the fourth began, the ULM offense erupted. With a hit and a steal by freshman Jackson Landry, a bunt by freshman Zach White and the ASU pitcher walking junior Angelo Aleman, ULM loaded the bases and took one-run lead.
With a full count, senior Colby Lunsford connected on a pitch and launched a 357-foot shot over left field. The Warhawks found themselves up five runs after the grand slam.
In the next inning, White doubled and batted in two runs after a hit and steal by both Landry and senior Jack Clark. Junior Bryce Blaser drove in another run with a sacrifice play.
Junior Barham White lifted a sacrifice fly to bring in a run in the seventh inning. An RBI single by Landry extended the lead to 10, ending the game.
Coach Michael Federico shared his thoughts on the season after the win.
“The season’s been back and forth but I’m excited with the win tonight and getting momentum to enter conference play,” Federico said.
He also expressed his readiness for conference opponent James Madison.
“I’ve never been to James Madison, but at the same time it’s a team that went to a regional last year,” Federico said. “We’ll be tested and I’m excited to get going.”
Be sure to support the Warhawks as they start the series against James Madison on March 14.
