On March 21, the ULM tennis team played in an early morning matchup against Georgia Southern at Heard Stadium and was unable to secure a win in any of the four matches they played. ULM currently has a 3-7 record, but they have not been able to grab a single Sun Belt Conference win.
Freshman Vanja Cado and junior Mariam Hatem started off the doubles matches as they went neck and neck with Georgia Southern. The Eagles fought back and asserted their dominance towards the end, claiming a 6-4 win.
In a similar fashion, sophomore Raquel Alvaro and freshman Tingyi Li rallied hard in the second doubles match but were still defeated 1-6 by Georgia Southern. Additionally, since the Eagles had already won two out of the three games, junior Camila Barranco and sophomore Enna Krnjic had to leave their court three game unfinished.
In the singles matches, ULM’s story remained the same, as Alvaro lost to Georgia Southern’s Nanaka Kijima on court five. Shortly after, freshman Mariia Iordanova and Hatem both lost their games on courts six and one, respectively, as Georgia Southern secured a 4-0 win. As a result, Li, Cado and Barranco left their games unfinished on courts two, three and four.
ULM did not win a single match in either the doubles or singles games, which extended their losing streak to four and added to their five-game losing streak against Georgia Southern. Historically, ULM has only won two games against Georgia Southern, whereas the Eagles have defeated the Warhawks seven times.
ULM has a tough schedule ahead, as they go up against Sun Belt second-seed Coastal Carolina on March 23 and sixth-seed Marshall on March 29. ULM will be the underdogs in these matches, as they currently rank at the bottom of the Sun Belt Conference.
With the Sun Belt Conference schedule already well underway, the Warhawks will need to regroup quickly as they look to break their slump and secure their first conference victory in upcoming matches.
