Returning home after a road trip to Ruston, the ULM baseball team prepared to make a home stand against conference opponent Southern Mississippi after a four-game losing streak. Southern Miss halted these dreams after winning 8-5.
The Golden Eagles scored first, with Davis Gillespie hitting an RBI double. The Warhawks retaliated with a single and a stolen base by senior Isaiah Walker. Junior Henry Garcia Jr. then hit a single to right field, allowing Walker to score. The next two batters had a strikeout and a lineout, tying the game 1-1.
Southern Miss proceeded to take the lead in the next inning after a triple by Carson Paetow and a sacrifice groundout by Ben Higdon. At this point, the Warhawk offense stalled, going five straight innings without a score. During that scoring drought, Southern Miss managed to extend their two-point lead to five, going up 5-1.
At the bottom of the seventh, ULM finally caught a break thanks to a Southern Miss pitching disaster. After a series of odd pitches and a walk, junior Jake Haggard hit a single to left center. Junior Kade Dupont followed with a successful bunt, placing two runners in scoring position. Southern Miss’s pitching woes continued, allowing the Warhawks to collect three more points. Southern Miss then ended the inning with two strikeouts and nine pitches, locking the score at 5-4.
Southern Miss scored two in the top of the eighth, while ULM scored from a wild pitch in the bottom. In the final inning, Southern Miss scored one more run for a total of eight runs. At bat for the final time, ULM suffered a strikeout and two quick groundouts, resulting in an 8-5 Southern Miss win.
Though the Warhawks could not pull off a win, the game leader, Landon Grigg, put up notable stats with five strikeouts.
Southern Miss went on to sweep the series, winning game two 7-6 and game three 14-2 in eight innings.
