The Lady Warhawks softball team continues to dominate while playing on home turf, remaining undefeated in Monroe. The winning streak remained unbroken against NSU, as the Warhawks won 10-4. Despite braving the high wind speeds, ULM put up a strong win.
ULM started the game off sluggishly in the top of the first. A single by NSU put a runner on first base. After that, a throwing error by ULM put two runners in scoring position, with second and third base held by NSU. A flyout by NSU secured the first run of the game but cost the other two runners, clearing the bases. ULM held NSU to one run, catching the lineout and switching possessions with the score 1-0.
Making up for the slow start, ULM retaliated with their first chance at offense. Sophomore Brooklin Lippert walked and stole second, with the first appearance at bat by ULM. Sophomore Meagen Brown delivered an RBI single that allowed Lippert to score. Brown’s sister, freshman Morgan Brown, followed next with a double allowing Meagen to score. The scoring paused when the next two hitters popped out and flied out respectively.
NSU’s wild pitch and throwing error resumed the scoring, allowing Morgan to score and extend the lead to two. Sophomore Ella Carter was walked by the pitcher before stealing second. Carter was followed by junior Kelsey Kovar, whose single allowed Carter to score, putting the lead at three. Another single by senior Layla Thompson put two runners on base. Rewinding to the top of the lineup, Lippert hit a groundout, stopping the score at 4-1 with ULM up.
Starting the top of the second inning, ULM’s pitcher walked two of NSU’s hitters. Following these walks, NSU hit two singles, allowing them to put their second run of the game on the board. A third fielder’s choice ended the top of the inning with ULM still up 4-3.
A mirror of the last inning, NSU’s pitcher walked two of ULM’s batters again before freshman Hollie Thomas fouled out. A flyout by sophomore Maryssa Zenzen allowed Meagan Brown to advance to third before Morgan stole second. Carter’s single allowed both sisters to score before Kovar grounded out. ULM ended the inning up 6-3.
NSU proceeded to go three and out in their next possession, with all three batters racking up an out. A double by Thompson and a bunt by Lippert put one more run on the board for ULM before NSU held them there. ULM ended the third up 7-3.
The fourth inning was scoreless as neither team could put a run up.
In the top of the fifth, NSU went three and out again, and ULM caught fire once more. Lippert stole two bases and was batted in by Meagan Brown. Morgan Brown flied out but allowed Meagan to steal second base. Buck then hit a double to allow Meagan to score. Zenzen reached base after a dropped fly ball by NSU, allowing her to reach second and Buck to reach third. A groundout by Carter finally let Buck score before NSU caught the next fly ball, closing the inning at 10-3.
In the top of the sixth, NSU scored their last run of the game after a single allowed a runner to get to third base before they stole home. After that, the final batter flew out before NSU held ULM scoreless. The Warhawks put on their last stand in the seventh, ending the game at 10-4.
Lippert finished the game with three hits, and Meagan Brown finished scoring three runs. The Warhawks extended their home record streak to 19-0 and their winning streak to five after beating NSU.
