On March 27, ‘The White House’ X account retweeted a post that displayed an artificially generated image of Virginia Bosora-Gonzalez. In addition to the terrible use of A.I. in the image, this post exposes the racism in our government. Offensive material should not be a part of any social media account, let alone one of an official government account.
The original post on March 18 of Bosora-Gonzalezs’s arrest was captioned, “Virginia Bosora-Gonzalez, a previously deported alien felon convicted of fentanyl trafficking, was arrested by @ICEgov in Philadelphia after illegally reentering the U.S.” In the photo, Bosora-Gonzalez can be seen crying while handcuffed. Another caption read, “She wept when taken into custody.”
The charged wording aims to dehumanize immigrants. Similar to the language, the drawing itself is meant to degrade immigrants by portraying them as deplorable.
This is not the first time that the official White House account has posted inappropriate material. On Feb. 18, they posted a video titled “ASMR: Illegal Alien Deportation Flight,” which featured immigrants being shackled prior to boarding a plane. ‘Jokes’ such as these not only make light of these people’s tragic situations but also give insight into the minds of the people running our government.
It is disturbing that the official White House account has time to make posts like this when there are so many other pressing issues. Instead of addressing the people’s concerns of the current situation surrounding Trump’s tariff policies, this official government account wastes time posting racist A.I.- generated images.
The lack of legislation surrounding this situation allows official government accounts to post anything without any real repercussions. Because people are more likely to believe what the government posts, it is important that these accounts have strict regulations regarding what is appropriate.
Instead of using their authority to stir the pot, these government accounts should seek to keep Americans informed. This gross misuse of social media platforms shows that the Trump administration is more interested in sending polarizing messages than in uniting the people. In addition to increasing the amount of legislation surrounding this gray area, users should not engage with these posts but instead focus on media that is actually dedicated to addressing their concerns.
