The ULM tennis team’s season-long struggles continued on April 11 at Heard Stadium with a 4-0 loss to University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), marking the Warhawks’ 10th straight defeat.
Despite a promising start in doubles play, ULM (3-13 overall, 0-9 Sun Belt) could not carry the momentum into singles.
On court one, junior Mariam Hatem and freshman Mariia lordanova were unable to hold off UTEP’s DeCora Antoine and Hanna Telynsio, falling 6-3. The pairing of sophomore Raquel Alvaro and freshman Tingyi Li was also unable to secure the win with a 6-3 final score on court two, giving the doubles point to the Miners. The Warhawks third doubles match went unfinished.
ULM was forced to forfeit court six at the start of singles play, a setback that put the team in a 2-0 hole. On court two, Iordanova dropped her match in straight sets despite a strong effort, and sophomore Enna Krnjic could not find her rhythm in a two-set loss on court three.
Junior Camila Molina Barranco eventually provided relief for the Warhawks, winning her first set and leading in the second on court four until the match was called once UTEP clinched the overall win.
ULM is now 2-2 all-time against UTEP.
The Warhawks have yet to secure a conference win this season and continue to struggle with converting early advantages into match victories. While the doubles teams have consistently put the team in position to secure wins, closing out singles matchups remains a challenge.
Looking ahead, ULM wraps up its home schedule on April 12 at 11 a.m. against South Alabama. To snap the losing streak and head into the postseason with momentum, the Warhawks will need to show more consistency, limit unforced errors and capitalize on key opportunities in singles play
