The first one hundred days of Donald Trump’s presidency have gone by, and with it our hopes that somehow things will not be so bad. So far, Trump seizing political power is worse than any of us could have ever imagined. This presidency is going to impact everyone, not just minorities and immigrants.
Most United States citizens are going to take the brunt of Trump’s economic choices. Tariffs are a tax on imports that are paid by American importers and works to discourage trade with another country. Because of the increased price that importers will have to pay, consumers will experience higher prices as well.
These tariffs have also increased the likelihood of a recession. As of April 15, J.P. Morgan puts the probability of the U.S. entering a recession at 60%. Despite Trump presenting himself as the best fix for the economy, he appears to be driving it straight into the ground.
The Trump administration is also interfering with the government research sector. According to the Associate Press (AP), the administration has been reported to remove public data from government websites, particularly on climate change. This will create a knowledge gap that will take years to fill while weakening America’s ability to respond to the ongoing climate crisis.
Last, and most concerning of all, the Trump administration will deport anyone that is deemed a threat. Reuters reports that Abrego Garcia, who had no criminal record, was sent to a torture prison in El Salvador over unfounded accusations of gang involvement in a state he had never even been to.
The AP has reported that Trump made an offhand remark during a White House press session with the president of El Salvador that he would like to start deporting “home-grown” criminals next, meaning criminals who are United States citizens.
However, the Trump administration has already lied about the innocent man who they deported to CECOT. In fact, a CBS News 60 Minutes report found that 75% of the migrants sent to El Salvador have no criminal record.
If the Trump administration is willing to deport innocent migrants, then there is no reason they would not also deport innocent citizens. No one is safe from Trump’s agenda. The American Dream is officially over folks! Strap in because the next few years are going to be a wild ride.
