After three consecutive games on the road, the ULM women’s soccer team (3-2) returned to their home ground, winning 2 -1 against Little Rock (1-2) on Aug. 27.
“We train every single day to pull out a win, especially home,” ULM forward Skylar Blaise said. “This is our home, so we have to stand strong.”
Having won only four out of 18 games against Little Rock, the Warhawks were determined to change the narrative.
The game started strong for the Trojans, as they were able to take the lead in the first eight minutes. Looking for a comeback, ULM pressured the guest’s defense into giving the Warhawks a corner. ULM midfielder Margret Edda Bjarnadottir crossed the ball from corner to ULM defender Libby Holmes, who was in the box. Holmes headed the ball to ULM forward Vienna Tokam, who hit the back of the net, scoring her first career goal. This was Holmes’ second assist this season and Bjarnadottir’s third.
With momentum in ULM’s favor, the offense went for another goal. The attack from the Warhawks managed to get them a freekick. The freekick proved to be crucial as ULM defender Ally Richardson found ULM midfielder Stacey Qosja near the post. Qosja assisted Blaise to make the score 2-1. Qosja claimed her first career assist, and Blaise scored her third goal of the season.
The Trojans tried to retaliate with another goal, but the half ended 2-1 in favor of the Warhawks.
Jen Handy, who received a red card in the 51st minute for using his hand to stop the ball from outside the box, started the second half with a huge mistake.
“No, it wasn’t [intentional],” Blaise said. “It’s just because we played with such a high line on defense, so usually when balls are coming like that, she has to make a quick decision. That was unlucky on her part. But she didn’t mean to do that at all.”
ULM head coach Will Roberts substituted in goalie Maddox Dolly for Bjarnadottir. Dolly played her first minute as a Warhawk in the goal. With ULM reduced to 10 players, the Trojans attempted to make their advantage count. However, the half ended goalless, keeping ULM in front.
Next on the schedule is Southern University. Cheer the Warhawks on Sep. 7 in Brown Stadium.
