After grabbing a comeback win over Little Rock, the ULM women’s soccer team kept the energy rolling in Brown Stadium on Sep. 4. The Warhawks won 3-0 against the Jaguars (1-4), improving their overall record to 4–2.
ULM goalie Maddox Dolly made her first career start and earned her first career clean sheet between the posts. ULM came ready from the opening whistle, controlling the early play and keeping Southern off-balance.
In the ninth minute, ULM captain Skylar Blaise opened the scoring with her fourth goal of the season. This was ULM forward Vienna Tokam’s first career assist. ULM kept piling on the pressure, racking up 5 corners in the first half only.
The effort turned out to be fruitful as a well-placed corner from ULM midfielder Ines de Lope Casanova found Libby Holmes, who slotted home her second goal of the season. By halftime, ULM hadn’t allowed a single shot on target.
Holmes talked about the offensive strategy used against Southern University.
“It’s really counter pressing,” Holmes said. “We’re trying to keep it [ball] in their half… we want to win ball in the air and that’s our main thing.”
Early in the second half, Southern finally recorded a shot, but the Warhawks responded with another scoring opportunity. In the 77th minute, ULM forward Ava Goodman scored from Beth Strutton’s set up through free kick, extending the lead 3-0 for ULM.
By the final whistle, ULM had outshot Southern by a wide margin, landing 12 on goal compared to Southern’s 0. ULM earned six corner kicks to none for the Jaguars. Goodman led in shots for the Warhawks with five, while Blaise added three shots to her contribution.
With this win, ULM not only claimed its second shutout of the season but also secured the third straight victory over Southern in the series.
“Winning two on the back now is really making this positive,” Holmes said. “If we can get that one against North Texas, we’re really positive about [the conference game.]”
Make sure to cheer the Warhawks as they play Texas State on Sep. 13 in Brown Stadium.
