ULM football traveled over to El Paso to take on the UTEP Miners on Saturday, Sept. 20th. After a hard-fought battle, the ULM Warhawks came out on top with a score of 31-25, and improved their season record to 2-1.
In the first quarter, the Warhawks and Miners traded touchdowns around the seven-minute mark, with Jake Godfrey scoring a 12-yard receiving touchdown from quarterback Aidan Armenta. Late in the first, ULM running back Braylon McReynolds broke through UTEP’s defense for a 40-yard touchdown run to make the score 14-7 to end the first.
The second quarter was all ULM on the offensive side. Early in the quarter, Jonathan Bibbs hauled in a 35-yard touchdown pass from Armenta, making the score 21-7. Looking to end the half with momentum, ULM’s offense got down to field goal range for Luke Stagg to make a 44-yard field goal, adding three points to ULM’s lead.
In the third quarter, ULM seemed to be running away with the game after Hunter Herring scored a one-yard touchdown run about halfway through the quarter. The Warhawks were holding all the momentum until UTEP got into field goal range and put three more points to their score, ending the quarter at 31-10.
The fourth quarter of this game showed proof that no lead is safe in college football. UTEP came down the field early in the quarter and scored a 44-yard passing touchdown and a successful 2-point conversion. With about 6 minutes left in the game, UTEP marched down the field again to score another passing touchdown to make it a one-score game, putting all the fans on the edge of their seat. Eventually, though, ULM held strong to its lead and ran the clock out, thanks to a very timely interception by David Godsey Jr., which sealed the game.
ULM dominated the run game with 250 yards compared to UTEP’s 33. This was a much-needed win after their last game at Alabama.
ULM will take on Arkansas State next Saturday, the 27th.
